Key Stage 4

We operate a two-week timetable with twenty-five lessons per week. There are two Curriculum pathways in Key Stage 4; students either follow a Core or an Accelerated pathway. The Core pathway is studied by the majority of students and consists of 9 GCSE’s, the Accelerated pathway is 10 GCSE’s; students study Triple Science and students have a reduced number of lessons for English, Mathematics and Religious Studies based on this pathway. 

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11)

Following consultation in Year 9, students start their Key Stage 4 programme. Most students study:

  • English (Language and Literature)
  • Mathematics
  • Religious Studies 
  • Science (either Combined or Triple Science)
  • At least one Modern Foreign Language

In addition, students also take two further options from a wide range of subjects. These are reviewed annually but currently include courses in:

  • Art and Design
  • Business
  • Child Development and Care in the Early Years 
  • Computer Science
  • Design Technology
  • Food Preparation and Nutrition
  • Geography
  • Health and Social Care
  • History
  • Media Studies
  • Music
  • Performing Arts
  • Physical Education

In addition to these Options inside the school day students may opt to complete a Microsoft Office Specialist Certification in after school sessions.

Some students, for whom additional support is required, there will be alternative pathways to support them across the curriculum.

Every student is different and the curriculum is reviewed annually in line with national changes as well as the needs of the particular cohort.

As well as examination subjects, all students follow courses in Personal, Social and Health Education and Physical Education.

At all Key Stages, the curriculum extends beyond the fortnightly timetable. There are many opportunities for visits, workshops, guest speakers and enrichment activities which enhance our students’ learning and all-round experience.

Examinations 

Year 10 Mock Examinations: The Year 10 Mock examinations take place in the Spring/Summer term, usually just before the Easter Holidays.

Year 11 Trial Examinations: The Year 11 Trial examinations usually take place in the Autumn term, just before the Christmas Holidays.

Year 11 External Examinations: Year 11 External Examinations usually take place from mid-May until late June.
