Physical Education (PE)
Curriculum Overview
PE and sport are deeply embedded into the curriculum at King Edward VI School, Lichfield. Our students experience a broad and balanced curriculum, allowing all students to feel supported and make progress. We believe that physical education goes far beyond the development of skills and helps to guide students in developing our 'life skills' qualities, such as good communication, organisation and teamwork.
As a large site, our students are fortunate to have access to a number of facilities, including a synthetic all-weather pitch, vast field space, tennis/netball courts, gymnasium, sports hall, squash courts and a dance studio. We also have a dedicated PE classroom. At Key Stage 4 and 5, students can choose to study physical education and sports science to examination level, with many students continuing on with further study or a career in sport.
Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3, students have two one-hour PE lessons per week; in this, the students are encouraged to explore and develop skills through a variety of different sports. Social, moral, spiritual and cultural skills are reinforced through teaching and learning so the students understand the importance of interacting with others and how fairness encourages all to participate. They also experience a number of other roles, such as leadership and officiating, which helps them to develop a further understanding of sporting activities and key transferable skills for life.
Key Stage 4
GCSE PE
The GCSE course is in addition to the core PE programme. It is important that the students enjoy physical exercise and show a strong commitment to extra-curricular activities. PE offers students the opportunity to develop their skills in a wide range of sports and activities and helps to improve performance. Students will learn about exercise, how the body works to help you exercise and then through training, how performance can be improved.
The course also allows students to develop a wide range of personal skills through involvement in physical activity.
Core PE Lessons
Physical Education is a compulsory subject for pupils in Year 10 and 11 in all schools. As well as continuing to develop their physical skills and fitness in practical lessons, our primary aim is to educate students to give access to lifelong learning and participation in physical activity.
Having experienced a wide and varied curriculum in Key Stage 3, at the end of Year 9, all pupils will be given the chance to choose a range of practical sports they wish to do in Year 10.

The branded PE Kit is supplied by Printable promotions, however, other non-branded kit, that is a very near match in style/colour (with or without the King Edward VI logo) is acceptable.

Have you grown out of your old PE kit?
If anybody has any PE kit that they have grown out of and it will not be used by a younger sibling, please could you donate it to the PE department. There are some students who cannot currently afford to buy new kit and it would be fantastic if we could help them. We also use it for the odd occasion a student forgets to bring an item of kit to the lesson. Thanks in anticipation of your support. Please bring it to the PE office.
