Curriculum overview

overall Intent

To enable students to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.

From making responsible decisions about alcohol to developing the skills to succeed in their first job, PSHE education helps pupils to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities young people will face growing up.

Implementation

PSHE is taught to all year groups. The content is delivered in lessons by form tutors, in one hour timetabled lessons, on a fortnightly basis. In addition, some topics are supported by assemblies and activities delivered in registration periods. Pupils are also able to engage with outside agencies and speakers.

Our PSHE curriculum consists of a progressive, spiral curriculum that deals with a wide variety of topics in a sensitive and age appropriate way, whilst also responding to new challenges that young people face in a rapidly changing world. We have built in an element of flexibility into the programme to enable us to respond to student needs, if and when they arise. Our programme of study is tailored to respond to feedback from students, staff and parents.

Our PSHE programme covers a wide range of personal development topics within the following themes:

  • Health & Well-Being Education
  • Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
  • Citizenship
  • Careers and Employability
  • Online Safety

PSHE lessons build on the school’s code of conduct (Ready, Respect, Strive) in the following ways:

Ready for the World

PSHE lessons enable students to be better prepared for life beyond the school grounds. Students will develop skills such as resilience and emotional literacy, which will enable them to manage challenging situations more effectively. Students will also learn more practical life skills such as financial capability, managing risk, how the UK legal and political systems work.

Respectful of ourselves and others

PSHE lessons give young people essential skills for building positive, respectful and non-exploitative relationships. Students are able to develop empathy and tolerance through exploring topics, such as diversity.

Strive towards achieving our full potential

PSHE lessons allow young people to develop questioning and challenging minds that want to learn. Students become empowered to improve their life skills by being better prepared to manage stressful situations whilst maintaining good mental health. A comprehensive careers programme also encourages students to set aspirational life goals.
