Core Mathematics

Why study Core Mathematics?

Studying Core Mathematical Studies helps students develop their quantitative and problem-solving skills. This is valuable preparation for the quantitative skills they will need for many degree courses, particularly subjects such as psychology, geography, business-related courses, sports and social sciences, and natural science courses that do not require AS/A Level Mathematics.

Many universities highly value Core Maths and it’s applications to other subjects. Students have the opportunity to learn about many areas of ‘useful’ Maths, from estimating answers to wide-reaching questions and how to calculate how much income tax they need to pay each month.

This is a qualification designed for students who have achieved a Grade 5 or above at GCSE Mathematics and wish to continue with an element of Mathematics in the Sixth Form.

How will I be taught / assessed?

Students will be taught for two hours a week for two years.

Core Maths is assessed purely by examination with two papers being taken at the end of Year 13, each 90 minutes long.

entry requirements

Students will be expected to have at least a Grade 5 in Mathematics GCSE and a good understanding and enjoyment of Mathematics.

It is essential that Core Maths is taken as a fourth option to support three full A Levels. It is worth approximately half an A Level.
