The Gwyneth Murray Literature Prize
Dave Murray, husband of Mrs Gwyneth Murray (who worked in the English department at King Edward VI School, Lichfield for over 20 years) sponsored 'The Gwyneth Murray Award for the most inspiring submission for A-Level Literature NEA' to encourage students academically, and to reward their independence and ability in their prose Non-Examination Assessment with a monetary prize.
About the Award
Gwyneth Murray joined the school in the late 1990s, after much experience teaching in London and Birmingham. As a student at the University of Newcastle in the 1980s, she was awarded a first-class honours degree in English, and she continued to demonstrate her passion and skill for Literature as a teacher for over 30 years. Unfortunately, in 2020 she was diagnosed with cancer and sadly passed away two years later. She was a much-loved teacher and colleague and the school is so pleased to be able to remember her, and her love for Literature, with the awarding of the annual prize donated by her husband.
Benefits
- Practice for your Non-Examination Assessment
- UCAS Reference
- Monetary prize for the best submissions
2024 Winners
Following a trip to watch a production of Othello at The Globe in London, Year 12 Literature students were asked to produce a written response to the day. The students wrote a variety of performance reviews, poetry and short stories inspired by the experience.
A £50 first prize was won by Freyja Mitchell. Runner-up prizes were received by Hannah Sirag, Eve Boyle and Isobel Smith.
The Gwyneth Murray Literature Prize will be awarded annually to the best piece of NEA in Year 13.
Congratulations to the winners and all those who participated. And a special thank you to Dave Murray.
